Jim Collins is a fourth generation Floridian currently residing in Saint Augustine. He moved from Deland, Florida in 2001 to attend Flagler College, and recieved his B.A. in fine art. After graduating from Flagler, he continued to focus on his art, experimenting with a variety of mediums and content.

Over the next two years, he created a series of images on wood cut-outs that he constructed in his studio. Mostly attracted to drawing and painting, he discovered that he had a peculiar interest in building things as well. Jim has always has an inherent interest for interacting with tools, and different woods or materials and as a result, began constructing different surfaces to paint on.

From 2007 to 2009, Jim attended the M.F.A. painting program at the Savannah College of Art + Design. There he continued to develop and focus on his art. He concentrated more seriously on a cohesive body of work, that of which still interests him today. His enjoyment and curiosity for building still fascinated him, and kept him motivated in his studio, believing it gave him the freedom and drive to keep creating.

The Fragility of Stability series revolves around a narrative of nature. One that perhaps only Jim sees.  He has always been fascinated by wildlife and the natural environment, particularly the ocean. Living by the beach in Florida, he spend lots of time near the water, fishing and observing the surrounding landscape. His fascination made him more drawn to and aware of all the things interacting within his habitat. Witnessing a good bit of development, and change, he finds himself striving to hold onto the way things used to, and are "supposed" to be.

The content of Jim's artwork almost always revolves around fish, birds, and other creatures found in his coastal surroundings. His images have an uncanny way of trying to show the relationship between man and Mother Nature. Jim tries to hold onto fleeing moments of certain authentic experiences through his art. Many times his images appear to function as a sort of scientific recording, or reference. He finds this captivation to be educational for himself and possibly others.

In other works, he leaves areas of his paintings foggy, or incomplete. He says this is how he chooses to portray that fleeing moment of a certain authentic experience, and how well we actually pay attention to our surroundings.
